>> far fewer problems weather- wise today. grab the shades and sunscreen because it's going to be almost summer-like this afternoon. here's a look at the day planner. expecting temperatures to rise quickly into the 70s by noon. some fog just not as bad as it has been. highs in the low 80s with a 5:00 p.m. temperature of 80-degrees. dense fog advisory this morning up to the north in frederick county, howard county, carroll county, baltimore, those areas are seeing the worst of the fog but patches of dense fog west of town culpeper out to luray. andrews air force base the visibility is a quarter mile right now. but frederick at zero. watch out north and we're going into the 80s this afternoon but unsettled for the week. we continue to follow breaking news this morning that's affecting the morning commute. a deadly crash at chevy chase circle. >> delia goncalves has been on the scene owl morning long ash -- all morning long. >> reporter: rescue workers

still here and just about 15 minutes ago we noticed that they were able to extract one of the two backseat passengers who unfortunately died in this fiery crash. here at chevy chase circle. let's take a look at some video that was shot a short time ago. it all started with a police chase a mile away at east-west highway and jones mill road. that's where we're told a police officer ran the tags of this car, discovered the vehicle was stolen about two weeks ago from this county. the officer attempted to pull the car over. at the 7400 block of connecticut avenue. that's when we're told the driver took off and eventually lost control here at the circle. striking the tree. captain paul starks with montgomery county police picks it up from there. >> the officers reported that first they saw smoke and then flames. engulfed the vehicle. they ran to the vehicle and extracted the driver and the front seat passenger. they also got the fire extinguishers and attempt today

put out the flames -- attempted to put out the flames. they were unable to do so. >> reporter: unfortunately again the two backseat passengers have perished in this fiery crash. they are now being extracted by rescue crews who are here at the scene. the driver and the front seat passenger we're told are both young men. described as late teens or young adults temperature driver we're told is -- the driver we're told is in serious condition in surgery right now. the front seat passenger though is able to talk to passengers and they are relying on the front seat pass somewherer to identify the two -- passenger to identify the two backseat passengers who perished in the crash. we will continue to update you in a half hour. back to you. >> thank you delia. delia goncalves live in chevy chase maryland. and as you seek it's a busy scene there. that will impact commuters. let's go to beverly farmer with more on that impact. >> andrea, southbound lanes of

connecticut avenue closed before you get to chevy chase circle obviously. if you're southbound coming down from kensington, you can take that over the 355 and wisconsin avenue to head on to chevy chase and on into the district. northbound connecticut avenue actually out of the district can get around the circle to go north and up toward the beltway. keep in mind the added volume we're going to see on 355 not only with that but remember we've been warning you about the added security at walter reed today coming down into bethesda. northbound 295 in the district just reopened all lanes between the suitland parkway and the 11th street bridge. that crash investigation completed. let's look live at the drive right now if we can. on our maryland cameras, getting connecticut avenue 410 check out that scene where they're detouring traffic. this is 355 near the beltway. where no incidents are reported right now. but volume is light on the outer loop into silver spring and friday mode and for travelers on 66 and northbound 95 up into springfield.

only light volume delays no incidents to report. the next check of timesaver traffic is 6:11. jessica back to you. now we have some more on that commuter alert beverly was just talking about. for everyone whose drive takes them past the bethesda naval medical center, there's a security drill going on there this morning. it will slow down people using the entrances off wisconsin avenue and jones bridge road. you're looking at live pictures right there. that's going to slow things down on the roads. the medical center is encouraging its workers to tell commute today. the worst of it is now and will continue through 8:00 a.m. the parents of trayvon martin are demanding the arrest of the man who shot their son nearly a month ago. >> they thanked supporters in sanford, florida last night. >> trayvon is my son. trayvon is your son. i just want to say thank you. thank you for all your support. it means a lot to me and my family. we really appreciate it.

we want justice for trayvon. [ applause ] >> the man who shot trayvon martin is george zimmerman, he used the live in manassas. zimmerman was a neighborhood watch volunteer who shot and killed the teen claiming self- defense. martin's parents have met with lawyers from the justice department which is looking at the case. florida prosecutors have not charged zimmerman because he says he acted in self- defense. florida is one of many states with what are called castle laws. your home is your castle and you can do whatever it takes to defend it. if someone breaks into your home and you fear for your safety, you can use deadly force. with no duty to retreat. d.c., maryland and virginia have those laws. florida law extends to the streets as well and you don't always have to try to flee the situation. former state's attorney glenn ivey says in our area that's not the case. >> you have a duty to retreat. so in other words if you can get away without using deadly

force, you have to do that first. >> in some states the law even protects you in your car. but in retreat states like our region you must try to use your car to get away from the danger before using deadly force. maryland lawmakers could vote as soon as this morning on the measure to expand gambling in the state. the build would let a casino to be built in prince george's county. county exec ty baker supports plans to build the plan. the measure would still need approval by voters in a referendum statewide. former councilman thomas jr. is having a tough time repaying the city the $300,000. the office of the attorney general says thomas made a $20,000 payment earlier this week. he's paid a total of $70,000 so far. authorities say his most recent payment will cover part of the bills which was due at the end of last year. the time right now is 6:56. and i am watching your money.

the gas pump isn't the only place you'll feel the steady rise in fuel prices. expect to pay more to travel the skies too. but there are some ways to find lower airfares this spring. and summer. you're feeling it on the road and if you're booking a flight soon, you'll feel it in the skies too. jet fuel is the airline's biggest expense when the cost of oil climbs higher. it doesn't take long to be passed along to consumers. you might want to adjust expectations when it comes to spring and summer airfares. >> i think consumers really have to rethink what a low airfare is. for years now, the airlines have been basically lowering airfares, competing with each other. and i think the airlines are taking the low fare punch bowl away from the party. >> another reason factor impacting prices? more consolidation like southwest's acquisition of airtran with fewer airlines consumers have fewer places to shop around.

one way consumers can improve that you are chances of finding a cheaper fare, have some flexibility with the dates. >> i would also recommend flying on a tuesday, wednesday or saturday because that's when the fares are going to be lowest. >> finally when shopping for tickets the best opportunities for salts are usually midweek. -- sales are usually midweek. in just the first three months of the year the biggest airlines already pushed through two fare hikes can this is the -- hikes and this is the slow season. i think it's safe to say, this is our new normal. >> i know. oh wow. >> i hate it. >> but i still want to go on vacation. our time is 6:08. a college student's outburst is caught on tape. >> i will kill the [ bleep ] -- >> in five minutes, learn what local students are saying about this and how colleges protect students in cases like this. >> howard says it's going to be a sunny and warm friday. but the weekend's not looking as great.

well, we've got some patchy dense fog this morning. but it's not as widespread and we're going to see a lot of sunshine. it's begin to be another very warm unseasonably warm day. highs up into the low 80s and changes for the weekend full forecast in just a few minutes.

howard, if you are making the drive out of connecticut avenue, into chevy chase, warning for folks on going crash investigation with the closure of connecticut avenue southbound at 410. they're diverting traffic east- west highway and crash investigation here closer to chevy chase circle. northbound connecticut can get astricts around the circle and up to the beltway. that's the biggest problem. more details coming up with timesaver traffic at 6:17. back to you. thank you beverly. the american soldier accused of killing 17 afghan civilians is now formally charged with murder. >> that's one of the stories making news at 6:11. army staff sergeant robert bales is facing 17 counts of murder along with assault and other charges. he's accused of killing afghan civilians while they slept. and burning some of the bids, the 38-year-old is being held at a federal prison in kansas. president obama is telling the government to fast track part of the keystone excel pipeline. it's the section running nearly 500 miles from oklahoma to

texas. construction is expected to start in june. environmentalists oppose the move. the senate committee will look into the bounty program in the nfl. that program was run by former redskins' defensive coordinator gregg williams. the league suspended him indefinitely and suspended saints' coach sean payton for a year. the committee will call representatives from all four major sports to testify. a violent outburst by college student is going viral on the web and it has some other students asking what their colleges would do to keep them safe. >> matt jablow shows us the video and gets reaction on local campuses. >> i will kill the [ bleep ] -- >> reporter: it happened without warning and apparently without provocation. during an evolution class at florida atlantic university. >> you will die. >> they were talking about peacocks and how females choose their mates by their most feathers. and the woman just started

asking about how that killed all black people. >> reporter: the young woman, a student at florida atlantic, proceeded to go on a four minute long expletive laden tirade. during which she threatened to kill her professor and several classmates. finally, after swinging at one person and shoving another, the woman was physically removed from the classroom. the incident was videoed by several students with their phones and post today youtube. today, it's the talk of college campuses all across the country. >> i've never seen anything like that before. >> reporter: including here in washington where some students at american university were disturbed by the video. >> she obviously has some kind of problem or something. >> reporter: others amused. >> i thought it was pretty entertaining. >> reporter: ed clark says in his opinion there's nothing i musing about the video. >> there's nothing amusing about that video. >> reporter: work needs to be

story this week. this morning loudoun county has been added along with washington county to the dense fog advisory. that goes until 10:00 it include montgomery, as well, so they have dropped it farther south. earlier it had just frederick and howard counties so that's an expansion to the south of the dense fog advisory until 10:00 a.m. visibilities up north have been the worst at frederick at zero. quarter mile westminster to hagerstown but you can see how it sunk into leesburg and northern montgomery and even gaithersburg a mile and a quarter. prince george's county one quarter mile and also down to culpeper and luray quarter mile visibility. patchy dense fog this morning as opposed to the really widespread stuff we had yesterday. our bus stop forecast calls for the areas of fog, temperatures are in the 50s and low 60s this morning with our sunrise six minutes after 7:00 a.m. and a good deal of sunshine today. in fact by noon temperatures low to mid-70s for the lunch hour. check out the cherry blossoms still in peak bloom. 79 degrees at 3:00 with highs

in the low 80s. yeah. low 80s, average high is 58 we'll still be 80 at 5:00 p.m. we are looking at temperatures across the board here 55 to 60 this morning although there's always a couple of compensations like lovettsville at 53 and sterling at 54 and college park at 56. some haze out there but generally clear skies. 60 degrees. humidity's high at 93% and right now the wind are nice and -- winds are nice and light. we're going to watch this storm system bringing in all the moisture from gulf of mexico head to us over the weekend and that will definitely increase the rain chances and cool the of thes. ed to 8 -- temperatures. today 81 in town. tonight 50s to around 60s. showers develop around midnight. 70s on saturday and more showers possible saturday night and again on sunday with highs on sunday only about 64 and then next week we've got temperatures on the cooler side with the chance of rain on wednesday. it's 6:17. we go to beverly farmer with our timesaver traffic.

busy this morning howard. if you head into chevy chase or northwest via connecticut avenue think again about your options. southbound connecticut avenue traffic detoured on to 410 east- west highway because of this crash scene down at chevy chase circle. the ongoing fatal crash investigation since the early morning hours southbound connecticut detoured on to 410. you can take that to 355 wisconsin avenue. you can go north to the beltway. if you heard about the earlier crash in the district 95 northbound, it is suitland parkway. that has been cleared and all lanes reopened there which is good news. traveling on the outer loop of the beltway out of prince george's county west into silver spring, volume womenning but all lanes open passing new hampshire avenue and georgia avenue and silver spring pace is still good here. cleaning up a crash virginia manor and the county. new crash into centreville right near 29 centreville. the left side of the roadway blocked for delays out of manassas. here's a volume delay springfield 295. you get up to the beltway ask

roane. mike is off today. meteorologist howard bernstein is live on the weather terrace with the forecast. >> a very comfortable morning here in northwest washington. generally clear clear skies overhead. some patchy dense fog in spots, the day planner look for a lot of sunshine today especially past the morning hours. the early morning hours with 70s for lunchtime and low 80s today with potentially some mid 80s south and southwest of d.c.. currently 60 with clear skies. dense fog advisories montgomery, carroll, howard, north and east until 10:00 this morning. you've been looking at visibilities up there this morning very low especially frederick right now at 0. south and west of town. luray quarter mile and andrews air force base quarter mile but it's a lot more isolated today or less extensive today than it was the last couple of mornings. frederick down to 53 be the fog while it's 55 in winchester. gorgeous morning in annapolis. 59 degrees and andrews with the

fog is at 54. this afternoon, expect partly to mostly sunny conditions. our average high is 58. we're going to be 20, 25 degrees above that with 81 at reagan national. little bit cooler on the bay. the bay still kind of chilly but manassas, fredericksburg, 84. some showers and storms for the weekend and some cooler temperatures. highs tomorrow around 70s and 0s on sunday -- 60s on sunday. jessica over to you. 6:30 an update on the breaking news you saw first here on channel 9. a deadly crash in chevy chase circle. >> and this is just north of where connecticut avenue crosses into the district. delia goncalves is there live with the very latest. delia? >> reporter: we can tell you now that rescue workers just cleared the scene an hour ago after being here for some timics tracting the two backseat -- time extracting the two backseat drivers who died in this crash. you can see that just the remnants of the car, charred debris. the charred car is now on a

flatbed being towed from the scene. we're told that vehicle is a stolen vehicle and it was stolen from the county to weeks -- two weeks ago. it start with aplites chase about a mile away on east-west highway around 1:00 a.m. police are telling us they ran the car's tags at that area which indicated the vehicle was in fact stolen. the officer pursued the car, tried to pull that vehicle over in the 7400 block of connecticut avenue. when the driver took off, eventually losing control and hitting a tree here in the circle. the car burst into flames and police rescued the driver and front seat passenger but could not put out the fire and retrieve the backseat passengers. >> the driver, front seat passenger, are males. and it appears to be that they are in their late teens possibly younger adults. the driver i would describe as serious. it was reported to me that he

was in surgery earlier. and that the front seat passenger was injured but is able to speak with us. >> reporter: now one last look live here at the scene as the car is about to be towed from the area. police are relying we're told on the front seat passenger to help them identify the two people who have died in this fiery crash. one police officer we're told suffered some minor burns as he was attempting to rescue the driver and front seat passenger. the police cruiser that we somehowed you that had front end damage. we can tell you that cruiser never came in contact with the stolen vehicle. rather it just hit another responding cruiser. we'll have much more on this developing story but that's the latest so far here from chevy chase. back to you. >> thank you. that's delia goncalves live in chevy chase, maryland. now we're going to go to beverly farmer with more on the traffic impact of all of this. beverly? >> absolutely. connecticut avenue if you're heading down from kensington from the beltway, you're not going to be able to get as far

as chevy chase circling. right now crews and police are detouring traffic on to fourth quarter 10 east-west highway. that will take you over to 355 wisconsin to head south into the district on into chevy chase. remember we're going to have added volume on 355 not only from the bailout of this situation but we're thinking down into bethesda with the added security at walter reed. keep that in find for the travels the morning. i-295 has been reopened in the district near the suitland parkway if you heard about that earlier crash. on 66. come out of manassas or haymarket crash clean-up is east of manassas before 29 centreville. has been tying up the left side of the roadway. the pace is better near manassas. northbound 95 has its challenges with the crash in springfield, one in the backup in 7100 newington, both are along the left side but delays pretty much out of wood bridge now which means 395 north past the beltway ask on through landmark, the pace is so much better. nobody can get here out of springfield right now. that's a look at your timesaver

traffic. back to you. it is coming up on 6:35. the police chief and prosecutor in sanford, florida are both stepping aside in the investigation into the murder of trayvon martin. he's the 17-year-old killed by a neighborhood watchman. >> this case is about to get some attention on capitol hill. susan mcginnis explains [ people chanting ] >> reporter: protestors chanted for justice as thousands packed a florida park demanding action for an unarmed teenager killed by a neighborhood watchman. >> you want an arrest? >> reporter: they're calling for the prosecution of george zimmerman, he claims he shot trayvon martin in self-defense. the 17-year-old was killed while visiting his family last month. >> he did not deserve to die and i pledge i will not let my son die in vain. >> reporter: there are questions about race in the investigation. >> enough is enough.

we are tired of going to jail for nothing. and nothing going home for something. >> reporter: the congresswoman representing sanford, florida says martin's case will be the focus of a hate crime hearing on capitol hill next week. mounting pressure forced sanford's police chief to step down temporarily. >> i do this in the hopes of restoring some semblance of calm to the city which has been in turmoil. >> reporter: cbs news learned the suspect was interviewed the night of the shooting and sources say evidence supported zimmerman's claim of self- defense. but some sanford residents say the case was mishandled. >> we just wanted to come out and show support for the family. and show unity in the community to try to make right an unjustice. >> reporter: the justice department and fbi are also investigating and zimmerman could still face charges. in washington, susan mcginnis, 9news now. going to have a live report from sanford, florida including more from trayvon martin's parents. the plan to put a tax surcharge on big earners is moving forward in maryland. the house of delegates advanced a major tax package thursday. among the provisions a tax hike for individuals making more than $100,000. and couples making more than $150,000. the house plan would generate about $220 million in additional revenue that's less than an opposing tax plan being considered in the state senate. the government is watching you and it's keeping the information it gathers even longer than it used to. the "washington post" reports counterterrorism officials can hold on to data if gathered about you for up to five years. the timeline used to be 180 days for people with no known connection to terrorism. data includes visa and travel records, the plan was approved by the obama administration and the justice department thursday. the white house says the move is needed to combat terrorism. the time right now is 6:37

welcome back to 9news now. at 6:43. friday morning, monika samtani is out today. i'm beverly farmer with your timesaver traffic. our breaking news story and traffic story this morning, had been the closure of connecticut avenue at chevy chase circle. looking at our live shot just reopening the roadway. you can see some bits of glass and debris but connecticut avenue now open each way.

chevy chase circle. connecticut avenue no longer being detoured southbound at 410. that's some good news, but we have a number of other problems this morning to deal with. 66 crash is going to be eastbound, east of manassas before 29 centreville. that was tying up the left side of the roadway with delays coming in out of manassas. there's a new crash in loudoun county on route 50 right near the parkway between there and gum spring road. police are responding. the pace is better here in centreville with the crash moved out of the way on 66. if you are northbound on 95 though you've been jammed up out of woodbridge helding into springfield, two crashes ahead of you. both were on the left side of the roadway. crash on new york. inbound 50 new york avenue at candle street. lanes are closed with the crash. details coming up in the next timesaver traffic and andrea back to you. thank you very much bev. when howard was out on the terrace you can hear the birds chirping in the background. they're happy and you'll probably be happy with the forecast for today as well. >> you know we have some fog. just not as much fog soothsay

plus. and temperatures this afternoon are going to be in the low 80s here in d.c.. going to be a beautiful afternoon. just got to get past the fog this morning. and we start talking about that dense fog advisory since last we met since earlier today, you know this has been expanding. it was issued this morning for frederick and howard and carroll and baltimore. but about 6:14 it got expanded into montgomery, and loudoun and washington counties as well. and this is where we're seeing some of the visibilities way down. this goes until 10:00 this morning with visibilities in you a spots up north are near zero right now. we've got visibility in frederick at 0 and andrews air force base at 0. warrenton at 0. over to manassas three quarters and even luray at 0. watch out in these spots. hagerstown about a quarter mile for the next couple of hours. but things are going to get better quicker than they have last couple of days. at the bus stop the morning areas of fog but not a bad morning out there. temps in the 50s and 60s. sun's im7:56. so not quite half an hour from now. and it's going to be a sunny day with temperatures by noon
